Under the Radar Friday (6): Lola of Lola's Reviews + Giveaway

Friday, March 13, 2015

Under the Radar Friday is a weekly blog feature here at Oops! I Read A Book Again where I invite a person to share five books they think are under the radar. The goal is to promote books we utterly love but are unjustly unpopular. Here's an avenue to pimp them out! To learn more about this feature, click here.

This week, I have a fellow book blogger who's choosing to spotlight self-published books she loves and I'm so stoked to give these authors and these books the spotlight too. So let's get to know and give it up for LOLA of LOLA'S REVIEWS!

About Lola

I am Lola, I am 24 years old and I live in the Netherlands. I have my bachelor’s degree in psychology and my master’s degree in economic and consumer psychology. I love reading books and writing reviews about them, hence the reason I started this blog. I am a bit of a critical reader and like to point out what I did and didn’t like about a book in my reviews. Before I started my own blog I was a co-blogger at K-books.

Let's get some awesome recs, shall we? In 3, 2, 1, go, Lola!

Thanks to Dianne for having me today at her awesome blog! I am Lola, blogger at Lola's Reviews, and today I am going to tell you about 5 books I loved, that don't get enough attention. The only thing all 5 books have in common is that they are all indie published and I gave all of them a 5 stars rating.

Removed (Nogiku seriues #1)

by SJ Pajonas

Duty knows no family. Love has no price. Secrets can cost you everything.

Twenty-year-old Sanaa Griffin is about to get more than she bargained for when she wishes for love, happiness, and excitement on New Year’s Eve. Ripped from the job she always loved, she is reassigned to work for mysterious Mark Sakai and spy on the corrupt leaders of her city. War looms on the horizon, and Sanaa must help Sakai determine the key players and their weak spots before it’s too late.

Mark Sakai has many plans for Sanaa that will take her into a web of lies and danger, and her only protection is to learn to defend herself. But defense training under the watchful eye of Jiro, a strong and enigmatic young man she has a crush on, was not what she expected. Between falling in love with Jiro and the information she is gathering, Sanaa realizes Sakai is holding back secrets about her family and her deceased parents, secrets as to why she was chosen for this job, and learning the truth puts all of humanity in jeopardy.

REMOVED is the first book in a captivating post-apocalyptic series that harnesses the cultures and traditions of Japan and sweeps them into the future between Earth and a faraway land.

Why I love this book

It's a better question to ask what I didn't love about this book. Ever since reading this book I have been hooked on SJ Pajonas her books and writing style and I can't wait for her next book. Removed has everything I want in a book and it kept my attention from the moment I read the blurb till the last page. It has a Japanese society, apocalyptic setting, romance, great characters, world building and surprising twists and turns. And Sanaa is such a great main character!

debtcollector season1
Debt Collector Season 1

by Susan Kaye Quinn

What’s your life worth on the open market?

In this gritty urban fantasy, debt collectors take your life energy and give it to someone more “worthy”… all while paying the price with black marks on their souls.

Lirium plays the part of the grim reaper well, with his dark trench coat, jackboots, and the black marks on his soul that every debt collector carries. He's just in it for his cut, the ten percent of the life energy he collects before he transfers it on to the high potentials, the people who will make the world a better place with their brains, their work, and their lives. That hit of life energy, a bottle of vodka, and a visit from one of Madam Anastazja's sex workers keep him alive, stable, and mostly sane... until he collects again. But when his recovery ritual is disrupted by a sex worker who isn't what she seems, he has to choose between doing an illegal hit for a girl whose story has more holes than his soul or facing the bottle alone—a dark pit he's not sure he'll be able to climb out of again.

Contains mature content and themes.

Why I love this book

This series has such an original concept with the whole debt collecting. It's written in episodic format and it works so well for this series. I have read the first two seasons and am eagerly awaiting the next season. This is a fast paced series that keeps you guessing, never knowing who are the good guys or not and everyone has a hidden agenda. This series surprised me multiple times and every time I thought I knew I was going I was proven wrong.

fire country
Fire Country (Country Saga #1)

by David Estes

In a changed world where the sky bleeds red, winter is hotter than hell and full of sandstorms, and summer's even hotter with raging fires that roam the desert-like country, the Heaters manage to survive, barely.

Due to toxic air, life expectancies are so low the only way the tribe can survive is by forcing women to procreate when they turn sixteen and every three years thereafter. It is their duty as Bearers.

Fifteen-year-old Siena is a Youngling, soon to be a Bearer, when she starts hearing rumors of another tribe of all women, called the Wild Ones. They are known to kidnap Youngling girls before the Call, the ceremony in which Bearers are given a husband with whom to bear children with.

As the desert sands run out on her life's hourglass, Siena must uncover the truth about the Wild Ones while untangling the web of lies and deceit her father has masterfully spun.

Why I love this book

Fire Country has an interesting setting and is one of the most original dystopia's I have read, combined with a great story and fun cast of characters this is one of the books I love. Siena, the main character has her flaws, but she is such a strong character. And the romance is subtle and done as a sub plot, but it fits the story and made me root for these characters. Definitely worth the read if you love original dystopia's.

soul avenged
Soul Avenged (Sons of Wrath #1)

by Keri Lake

Passion is blind in vengeance and love ...

Ayden’s suburban home was invaded by a pack of Lycans.

The brutal attack is the only memory she carries of her former life.

Now, one motive burns in her soul:

The Sons of Wrath—a brood of vengeance-dealing warrior demons—band with Ayden to hunt the Lycans on Detroit’s most deadly feeding grounds.

Kane Walker should've been her easiest kill.

Unfortunately, the newly bitten Lycan has something she wants—clues that may finally lay her past to rest. To reach them, she must be willing to submit to the sensual pleasures awakened by his touch.

Time is running out.

In seven days, Kane will become what Ayden despises most. She can halt his transformation but the antidote requires the ultimate sacrifice. As the beast takes hold, Kane becomes more of a threat.

Ayden must choose between her lust for revenge, or surrender to her enemy and discover a horrible truth.

Sons of Wrath

Never gamble with vengeance

Why I love this book

A dark and gritty world, with great main characters, romance and a plot that keeps advancing every book, but with enough subplots that each book things actually get resolved as well. And the world building is done so well, you really get a feel for this world and Keri did a great job making this world come alive and then there is all the world building about the demons and their society. It's amazing!

Skye Whitcomb is running from her troubles, and where better to run than Europe? Fresh out of college, she makes quick plans with her best friend Paige and hops on a plane.

Of course, nothing ever goes as planned—at least not for her. First, Paige has to bail, and Skye’s left to travel alone. Then she meets sweet and sexy Asher Benedict in Paris, and sparks fly after a night together on the train to Rome. He’s all kinds of perfect for her, but the timing couldn’t be worse since she was running from the altar when she left—so the last thing she wants right now is a relationship.

But Skye’s about to discover that no matter how far you run, love can find you anywhere.

Why I love this book

This is one of the few contemporary romances that got a 5 star rating from me. Anywhere is one of the best NA contemporary romance books I've read, it's original, happy and light while still dealing with some serious topics. There also is a great romance, which builds slowly. The characters are so perfect for each other.
