Only A Kiss
Title: Only A Kiss
Author: Ines Bautista-Yao
Publisher: Chamber Shell Publishing
Date of Publication: November 29, 2014
Genre: contemporary romance

When she was nine-years-old, Katie knew she wanted Chris to give her her first kiss. It wasn’t because she was in love with him (no way, he was her best friend! Besides, she was in love with his fourteen-year-old big brother), it was because she could make him do anything she wanted.

Besides, it didn't really mean anything. It was only a kiss after all.

But then things started to change. They grew up. They parted ways and went to different high schools. And other girls and boys—well, just one particular boy—came into the picture, throwing their lives upside down.

Told from the alternating points of view of Katie and Chris, this love story between two best friends will tug at your heartstrings and leave you thinking how the simplest things can mean so much.

My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Thank you to Ines for the review copy! Having received one did not affect my views of the novel in any way.

You have to know that I absolutely love best-friend romances so I was really excited to read Only A Kiss. And it was so cute! I love best-friend romances because I enjoy reading (or watching) about that creeping awareness that you might actually like/love your best friend in a romantic sense. The slow build-up into something more. Best-friend romances face a different set of problems from normal couples. Usually, someone falls for the other first or they don't want to possibly lose their friendship when everything goes to shit so they don't even try. I love reading every possible conflict in best-friend romances. Which made me enjoy the breezy ride that was Only A Kiss.

We follow Chris and Katie's friendship ever since they were kids, through high school, through college, through different beaus and heartaches, through everything. We see how they ended up friends and how they stayed friends. We see them grow, make mistakes, learn from them, and everything. In a span of a novella!

Only A Kiss is told in the third person perspective but it alternates from Chris and Katie, which of course I absolutely adored. Nothing's better than reading from both perspectives in romantic stories. Nothing. Both main characters were dear and easy to relate to and you'll be rooting for them. It was a bit slow at the start because characters and relationships are introduced but once Katie and Chris reach high school, we start to get more conflicts.

All in all, a quick read but definitely a sweet one! I recommend this for anyone who's looking for a short contemporary romance that will surely hit the spot. Especially for fans of best friend romances!

P.S. The cover is A+. So so pretty.

Theme Song

Of course, I immediately thought of JUST SO YOU KNOW by Jesse McCartney when I read Only A Kiss. I mean, best friend romances! Unrequited love! P-E-R-F-E-C-T. And I also think Katie and Chris surely know this song. If you don't know the song (HOW OLD ARE YOU?), I included the lyrics below. Enjoy!

I shouldn't love you but I want to
I just can't turn away
I shouldn't see you but I can't move
I can't look away

And I don't know how to be fine when I'm not
'Cause I don't know how to make a feeling stop

Just so you know
This feeling's taking control of me
And I can't help it
I won't sit around, I can't let him win now
Thought you should know
I've tried my best to let go of you
But I don't want to
I just gotta say it all
Before I go
Just so you know

It's getting hard to be around you
There's so much I can't say
Do you want me to hide the feelings
And look the other way

And I don't know how to be fine when I'm not
'Cause I don't know how to make a feeling stop

This emptiness is killing me
And I'm wondering why I've waited so long
Looking back I realize
It was always there just never spoken
I'm waiting here...been waiting here
