Lovely Vicious (Lovely Vicious, #1)
Title: Lovely Vicious (Lovely Vicious #1)
Author: Sara Wolf
Date of Publication: November 5, 2013

Fire meets ice. Love meets hate.

Seventeen-year-old Isis Blake hasn’t fallen in love in three years, nine weeks, and five days, and after what happened last time, she intends to keep it that way. Since then she’s lost eighty-five pounds, gotten four streaks of purple in her hair, and moved to the Buttcrack-of-Nowhere Ohio to help her mom escape a bad relationship.

All the girls in her new school want one thing – Jack Hunter, the Ice Prince of East Summit High. Hot as an Armani ad, smart enough to get into Yale, and colder than the Arctic, Jack Hunter’s never gone out with anyone. Sure, people have seen him downtown with beautiful women, but he’s never given high school girls the time of day. Until Isis punches him in the face.

Jack’s met his match. Suddenly everything is a game.

The goal: Make the other beg for mercy.

The game board: East Summit High.

The reward: Something neither of them expected.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Thank you to Chyna of Lite-Rate-Ture Book Tours and Sara Wolf for the review copy. Having received a free review copy did not affect my views of the novel.

Tallyho, chaps! What do we have here? An effing awesome book that is. I have been bogged down by consecutive meh reads and here comes this book which just engaged me that I'm willing to have a ring on my finger for it. We have Isis Blake, our once-fat, never-gonna-love-again, strong and kick-ass heroine with a sardonic wit and humor and who doesn't let anyone trample on her. And we have her perfect match and antagonist, mysterious, world-weary Ice Prince Jack(ass) Hunter, who against his will gets interested in loud-mouthed and bitter Isis. Even without a plot and just these two characters, the novel will still rise above the rest. Then put in that layered plot and I am so gone, gone in the land of  amazing novels.

Our two main characters are just so dimensional you'll have to peel each layer to know them more. And what an experience it is to know them. LOVELY VICIOUS is a dark YA novel and I tell you, it is dark. Both Isis and Jack have a severely dark and violent past and the satisfaction (though coupled with sadness, pity and empathy) in unraveling it was addicting. Yes, I am mightily obsessed with this novel. It turned me upside down in the best way possible.

Isis and Jack's banter and obvious chemistry were so entertaining and palpable that I couldn't stop reading. Isis punched Jack in a party when he made her friend cry and here starts the war. Granted, Isis is into it more than Jack, as Jack couldn't care less. But Jack still hurts Isis when he uncovers her past that she tries so hard to forget and bury. At times, Isis and Jack show their vulnerable side which results to me loving them even more and in them seeing each other in a new light.

And here's the thing. Isis is not beautiful. And yes, she was fat before. I know, hallelujah! A YA heroine who isn't pretty and she knows and acknowledges it. She's not shy, although she truly believes no one will love her. Her self-confidence is a mask though. Her walls are there and she doesn't trust anyone. I know it's sad. But she's got self-deprecating humor + pragmatic view on things + a loud and dirty mouth + cynical bitterness + smart, which makes an awesome YA heroine in my book. ULTRA AWESOME. Or maybe because I kind of see myself in her and I love myself? #psychoanalyzingmyself Anyway, Isis is the bomb.

Then Jack Hunter. He's an asshole for all that he is but when you get to know him, you get why he's like that. That nothing interests him because he has seen too much and he has only one goal in his mind. He has been living indifferently until here comes Isis and she's the only interesting thing that has ever happened in years. Naturally, he can't help but gravitate to her. Not gravitate as in like her but be curious and observe her and analyze her. Jack is smart, hot, handsome but is so closed-off. So when Isis starts getting to know him by stalking him and irritating him (it is war, afterall), we get to see who Jack really is.

It's so hard to review this novel because I couldn't tackle the issues it dealt with without spoiling you. But please, for the love of ice cream, do read this novel. If you're a fan of dark YA with damaged teens in them, this is perfect for you. And even if you're not into those, you should start with this one. The conflict just snowballed in the end but the slow-budding romance (I wouldn't even call it much of a romance actually) and the characters driving the whole novel were to-lose-sleep-over good. That good.

Moreover, the writing. Sweet baby cheesus, that is one immensely terrific writing. LOVELY VICIOUS is mostly narrated by Isis but Sara Wolf changes perspectives sometimes to showcase Jack's point-of-view. Which works so well because the scene just calls for Jack's thoughts. And of course, I love me some guy's POV, which Sara Wolf has executed perfectly (though it got a bit new adult in there). Isis spends most of the time digging about Jack's secrets while we spend the time getting slack-jawed drooling on how Sara Wolf has written this superbly. First, teenage speak. Second, fluid and highly engrossing dialogue. Three, tangible emotions and thoughts emanating from the author's words. GUYS, THIS IS GREAT STUFF IN HERE!

As for the ending, WHERE IS THE SEQUEL???? I know it's already February 2 and heck, February 10 is only 8 days away but gah, waiting is such a torture! So yes, it ends in a cliffhanger but a great one at that. But really, everything about this book is great to me so I suggest you go read it NOW and spend the next few days with me, tortuously waiting for the sequel. You will be wound up so tight like me you might explode. So let's? Let's explode together. Two words to describe LOVELY VICIOUS? Viciously amazing.
