In a sizzling prequel novella to her new series THE DARK ELEMENTS, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout draws readers into the extraordinary, irresistible world of Wardens and demons.

Dez wasn't just Jasmine's crush. A gargoyle Warden like Jas, he helped her come to terms with her destiny—fending off demons and maintaining balance between good and evil. He was her everything...right until the moment he disappeared without a trace. It didn't help that Jas's father had just announced that she and Dez would one day be mated. Hard not to take that personally.

And now he's back, three years older, ten times hotter, ready to pick up exactly where they left off. But Jas isn't taking that risk again. Dez has seven days to meet all her conditions and earn back her trust. Seven days filled with terrifying danger and sweet temptation. Seven days to win her heart—or shatter it all over again...

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Thank you to Lisa of Harlequin Teen and NetGalley for the review copy! This in no way affected my views of the novella.

So this is my first JLA and now I get why everyone and their mothers love her and her books. She knows how to write drool-worthy guys and definitely swoon-worthy plots. BITTER SWEET LOVE is just a prequel novella to her The Dark Elements series that focused on some of the side characters we'll eventually know in WHITE HOT KISS. And as a novella, it certainly did a bang up job in seamlessly introducing us to the world this series is set in. Gargoyles? OH HECK YEAH. Gargoyles and demons and humans living on Earth in modern day New York and/or DC? OH HELL TO THE HECK YEAH. Oh my. By the end of the novella, I was aching and yearning for more. I need MOAAAARRR. Of Dez and Jasmine and absolutely more of this series. Sigh.

Let's get to the writing. So this is how JLA write. Aside from putting your panties in a twist from either pining for more or from too much giddiness, it doesn't seem like JLA runs out of words to use. Sapphire, lapis lazuli, she used a lot of words just to tell the color blue. I mean, that was awesome. Though the writing wasn't something of a feat or groundbreaking, she really knows how to up the ante and get readers invested in the story.

And yey for kickass heroines! For gargoyles, women are just for keeping them out of extinction. But Jasmine wants to experience what life has to offer. She defies rules and stands her own ground. I just love her, okay? As for Dez, sure, he's mysterious and A WHOLE LOTTA SEXY but he's not just that. He respects Jasmine's need and want for more for her life and supports her. He treats Jasmine as an equal and especially for the Wardens (the gargoyles), that's A LOT.

As for the romance, whew. Hot and sweet. *fans self* We each get a look into both characters in such a short time and I really like what I saw. Both Dez and Jasmine have their own hang-ups but it's so evident that they're for each other. It was sweet as well when Dez wasn't rushing Jasmine at all and that he's all for waiting. Sure, WHITE HOT KISS won't be focusing on Dez and Jasmine but I for sure want to read more of them too. But who am I kidding? I CANNOT WAIT FOR WHITE HOT KISS BECAUSE THAT HOT DEMON IN THE END WHO I NOW KNOW IS ROTH? I NEED TO READ ABOUT HIM. LIKE NOW.

So my first foray into JLA went amazingly well and I will definitely get to reading her other books now. BITTER SWEET LOVE is a great prequel novella in my opinion as it showed such great depth into the world of The Dark Elements series while still making you hungry for more. And that's how novellas should be, right? I am certainly absolutely fervently excited for WHITE HOT KISS! Go Team Demons! Heh.
