Title: Endless
Author: Amanda Gray
Publisher: Month9Books
Date of Publication: September 10, 2013
Genre: time travel YA romance

Jenny Kramer knows she isn't normal. After all, not everybody can see the past lives of people around them.

When she befriends Ben Daulton, resident new boy, the pair stumble on an old music box with instructions for “mesmerization” and discover they may have more in common than they thought. Like a past life.

Using the instructions in the music box, Ben and Jenny share a dream that transports them to Romanov Russia and leads them to believe they have been there together before. But they weren't alone. Nikolai, the mysterious young man Jenny has been seeing in her own dreams was there, too. When Nikolai appears next door, Jenny is forced to acknowledge that he has travelled through time and space to find her. Doing so means he has defied the laws of time, and the Order, an ominous organization tasked with keeping people in the correct time, is determined to send him back.

While Ben, Jenny and Nikolai race against the clock - and the Order - Jenny and Nikolai discover a link that joins them in life - and beyond death.

My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Thank you to Mary Ann of Chapter by Chapter and Month9Books for the review copy. This in no way affected my views of the novel.

Right from the get-go, I knew I would give this book at least four stars. I was mightily into it and even with my very busy schedule, I had the drive to read it. However, something happened at the midpoint which ultimately led to me taking out a star from my rating. But let's get to that later. For now, I am listing five reasons why Endless is awesome.

1. Writing. The writing was well-done and beautiful. Vivid imagery, sensations and emotions you could almost feel yourself and words strewn together for impact - all of those were in this book.

2. Time travel. Enough said. Am I such a cop-out? But seriously, anything time travel rocks. With time travel, there's an innate conflict. How can two people from different time eras be together? Moreover, I always love reading about an author's new take on the hows and whys of time travel. Is it because of a necklace or a key or a music box? Is it because of a spell or an incantation? Is it genetic? We don't get specifics about it in Endless but I'm sure the next book will answer that. Still, the idea of leylines having to do with time travel was cool. Moreover, the author's explanation wasn't confusing at all.

3. Historical. Romanovs! Russia! Goodness, I love that the other time featured in Endless isn't common. Plus, they took bits of history and incorporated it into the novel. I always dig that.

4. Lots of secrets and mysteries. Endless made me ask so many questions, which it satisfyingly answered bit by bit. Still, some mysteries were left hanging for the next book, which adds to the itch to read the sequel.

5. Ben. Ben is amazing. Sure, I am also tired of broken, cynical guys in YA who act like a jerk. But with Ben, it was different. I enjoyed seeing him be so abrasive and then go all soft after some time. When he shed his tough act, Ben was such a sweetie. He has depth and is a dimensional character. Plus, I love underdogs!

Which is the reason why I took out a star from my rating. I was so engrossed with Endless and enjoying Ben and Jenny's interactions right until halfway when Nikolai came into the picture. Cue instalove. Cue my groans of displeasure. I hate instalove. Sure, this is totally not my style, to root for the guy in the present. I usually ship the girl with the guy from the past. However, I didn't see much depth and dimension to Nikolai. I sometimes gloss over cases of insta-love when the characters are awesome. Sadly, I didn't have any connection or any feelings of investment towards Nikolai. Thus, you can imagine my dismay with more displays of love and affection between Jenny and Nikolai with my Ben left there, jealous and alone. Huhuhu, poor baby Ben.

But objectively, the romance between Nikolai and Jenny was sweet and epic. It's a time travel romance so of course it's gonna be epic. Unfortunately, it didn't move me.

Still, I would recommend this novel to time travel romance fanatics and just about anyone because it really is GOOD. But if you normally side with underdogs, I am warning you that it's gonna hurt. My dear, dear Ben. Let's just be together. Hahaha!
